When the Vegetarian turns Carnivore 🦁

I’ve spent 35 years eating as a vegetarian.Ā  Plant based, sometimes vegan. On top of that avoiding foods containing fat as I was a product of the 80’s marketing where fat was the devil, and looking for products that said fat free.

However, 18 months ago I decided after all those 35 years knowing that as a human being I am designed to eat meat, but somehow had the discipline and the stubbornness to continue with my non meat eating ways, I found I was hitting my 50’s and wondered if I should start to replenish myself as I wasn’t as lively as I was once.

My increased work load, my love for the gym and training, Katie Ryan Selina and Marisa AbbewĀ  @proprep meals gave me the support to make it ok to start my journey back to Carnivore !Ā  Yes I had to reinvent myself, but hey, who needs to be the same old same old.

So I’m going to start telling my story in hope that I can support anyone who wishes to reach out to me to ask who I lent on for support and be that support in return.

Animal Fats

Eating the fats my parents fed me has been the game changer for my moods and reducing my anxiety levels down to zero.Ā  Don’t get me wrong, I get concerned and have oodles of empathy, but I don’t let it get me in a spiral, but I often turn on my how to turn a problem into a solution part of my brain on , as it had been dormant for a while.

When I looked into why this could be, it all makes sense.

The key nutrients we get exclusively from animal fats are arachidonic acid and the fat-soluble vitamins A, D and K2.

Arachidonic acid serves as a precursor for endogenous cannabinoids (the calming, feel-good neurotransmitters). There is only one source for the body to get adequate arachidonic acid and that is from fatty animal foods like butter, lard, (beef dripping) egg yolks, liver and meat fats.

Animal fats also supply 18-carbon saturated fatty acids, which support hormone production and cell-membrane integrity. The body needs these saturated fats and needs a LOT of them. If we don’t eat animal fats, the body has a back-up plan on how to make these fatty acids , and that’s fromĀ  refined carbs.

SOOOO, if you are on the roller coaster of cravings forĀ  refined carbs (and also if you are struggling with alcohol dependancy), eat plenty of animal fats. Eat meat with fat, not just lean chicken breast, load up on eggs, enjoy full-fat cheese, eat bacon for breakfast and put butter on everything!

It’s a game changer and I feel like I’m back in the game.
